Builder Spotlight: Billy Favata

When it comes to vintage motorcycles, few names carry the passion and dedication like Billy Favata of Billy’s Vintage Iron. Known in the community by his Instagram handle @BillysVintageIron, Billy has built a reputation for keeping old iron alive, always finding ways to bring history back to life with style and function.

Daily Ride & Garage Staples

Billy’s go-to ride is his Triumph T120, which he describes as a perfect city bike and a breeze to start. Beyond that, his garage houses gems like a 1965 Triumph T120 and a 1973 Harley FX, both of which reflect his deep love for classic British and American machines. Among his favorites is the scooped gas tank on the T120, a detail that reminds him why he loves working on vintage motorcycles.

Racing & Road Adventures

When it comes to riding, Billy is drawn to street riding most of all, but he also has a soft spot for racing. He calls Elkhart Lake his favorite track, citing his love for road racing. For unforgettable events, the Chief Blackhawk meet in Davenport stands out as a top memory.

Billy also treasures road trips. One of his most memorable took him to the South of France, where the roads, people, and countryside all came together to create an experience he’ll never forget. His must-have travel item? Rain gear—because even the best rides come with unpredictable weather.

Beginnings & Builds

Billy’s motorcycle story started at just twelve years old, when he stumbled across a rest area filled with about forty choppers. He didn’t know what they were at the time, but he instantly knew they were cool. That early spark turned into a lifelong obsession with building and restoring bikes.

Like many builders, Billy’s journey began with necessity. He was broke and couldn’t afford a running motorcycle, so he put one together himself. Over the years, his projects have ranged from personal favorites like his 1926 Harley FE, to one of his most challenging builds—the Panster he created for a friend. That build required reworking everything from the frame to the Kiwi leaf spring front end, while adapting a Sportster rear mag wheel and springer front brake to make it all function together.

Inspirations & Influences

When asked who he’d invite to The Mama Tried Show, Billy points to Mike Lange, admiring his “cutdowns” as the style he’s most interested in. Outside of motorcycles, Billy draws influence from music—especially early 1950’s roots rock ’n’ roll. It’s a rhythm that flows into his work and personal style.

Books also play a role, with Under the Black Flag coming to mind as a favorite read. His dream bike with an unlimited budget? A 1928 Harley JDH.

Food, Family & Gratitude

Away from bikes, Billy keeps things grounded. He’s got a soft spot for a Black and Blue Burger, and when it comes to brand loyalty, he gravitates toward Triumphs and Harleys, though BSAs find their way into the mix too. His soundtrack ranges from Anne Cole to The Neanderthals to The Cramps, always fueling his garage time.

And when it comes to gratitude, Billy makes it simple: he thanks his son, Brent, for being part of the ride.
